Bridges Burnt. Literally!

The bridge across the Zolotoy Rog bay is a facility that will appear in Vladivostok by the APEC summit in 2012. On December, 12th, a formwork at one of the bridge’s pylons caught fire. The fire spread to the area of 500 square meters and it took almost 11 hours to extinguish it. 167 people and 38 vehicles took part in the firefighting.

They have already started a probe to establish the cause of the fire and the structure’s safety. According to the region’s emergencies ministry, “human factor” (welding) is the most likely cause of the blaze.

The main task for the firefighters was to prevent fire from spreading under the bridge where a five-storied apartment building and privately-owned houses are located.

Even if main beams suffered no damage, as they say, which is hard to believe, then bridging joints and concrete surfacing will certainly need to be remade.

That will meen a couple of months delay in opening (the opening ceremony was planned for the summer of 2012).

By the way, this bridge seems to bring bad luck to people. Thus, its first designer commited suicide.

A lot of workers suffered during the construction works.

And now the fire…

Pieces of burning planking are falling down.

People came out to the streets to make a photo and shoot a video of the burning bridge.

In other words, what’s going to happen to this bridge in future is up in the air.

  1. I hope no people were killed in fighting this blaze. These things can happen at construction sites. In the US there is a lot or regulations that make the cost of construction higher and delay production. However, often these kind of accidents are avoided. I wouldn’t want to live next to this bridge though.
