As the long Russian winter drags on, fish in the ponds of St. Petersburg become increasingly desperate for oxygen, clustering in vast thrashing masses at shrinking holes in the ice. Not only does ice block oxygen that could be diffused into the water from the air, but it also impedes sunlight from reaching oxygen-generating plants and algae in the water.

I was looking at the photos of the poor fish trapped in the icy water and I suddenly realized how wonderful nature is to put the fish testicles inside their body to protect from them the cold. Otherwise, the male fish could meet with a fate much worse than oxygen deprivation.
Poor fish. I hope some people go and cut more holes in the ice so the fish don’t die.

As much as I know, FISH doesn’t breath air.
They get oxigen from water.
I suspect these fishes are searching for food, instead of air.
that’s quite normal in winter when the oxygenlevel in water is running low in all arctic areas. Reason why fish come to the surface of water is that couple of centimetres from surface to deeper contais some oxygen and fish are desperately looking that. and yes, they cannot breathe in air
